WOW! Sorry it's been a while since our last post...
Well... anyway it's the middle of January here and yesterdays temp was 51 degrees!
Hope 2012 is treating you well!

No snow to speak of...but I hear it is around the corner.  Here are a few local artists we carry if you really have forgotten what it is supposed to look like here.  Bill Pavelsek and Marla Brenner's paintings have captured our usual winter scenes.

And a couple of brighter images of newer works we have in the gallery today.

Local Family Owned Business

We recently had this article printed about us as a local family owned business in the State Journal.
The center image is Brian Farrell, artist-danielle o'connor akiyama, and Gary Milward during a show we had featuring the artist..

In case you missed it:
Gary’s Art & Frame, Ltd. and Milward Farrell Fine Art
Fine custom framing and Exquisite Crafts

Many Clients know me as “Gary” …Gary Milward and his Golden Retrievers…

What began as a love of Art and a desire to grow a business devoted to the arts became a reality for me back in 1981 when “Gary’s Art & Frame, Ltd” opened for business…during another recession.

Having earned a degree in Art from Edgewood College, the interest and skills to frame my own art seemed like the perfect combination of talents to put into practice to create a business that is truly a labor of love to this day.  The perks of being one’s own boss has had its downfalls as well, but the fact that it has allowed me to develop many lasting relationships with our employees and customers is one of the best aspects of this business.

Every day, customers bring us new challenges…an old family photo, a christening gown, even their grandfather’s old violin. The old saying, variety is the spice of life truly pertains to our business.  In a custom frame shop, we never know what to expect.

One of our best  assets is our employees…many have been with us for years, becoming a large part of our success.  In a hands on business such as this, continuity is key to developing trust and confidence with our clients…Trust that what we design to compliment their art or family treasure, will preserve, protect and present the item for decades to come.

As our client’s homes became bigger, the need for larger art grew; mouldings became larger and so did the variety of matting and glazing options.  As we began our business, scientific studies of the adverse effects of certain products and practices common to picture framing began to change.  Today, we use only the highest quality archival products to complete a project…Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “If you invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life”…this has always been how we approach everything…each custom framing project we do for our clients, every artist we represent and all of the finely crafted items we sell in our stores.

Early 1994, we decided to expand …to become more than a destination for framing and fine art in Middleton.  Fine crafts such as hand blown glass, artist crafted jewelry, sculpture and pottery were entering an exciting period of growth, a renaissance of sorts.  In order to represent these emerging artists, a second location was opened with partner Brian Farrell, now known as Milward Farrell Fine Art in Knickerbocker Place on Monroe Street.  From the start, with more walk in traffic and our great location we have showcased the works of many  more artists and craftsmen
than we were previously able to carry.

The jewelry cases feature an ever changing array of wearable art…from Terri Logan’s River Rock and Sterling collection to Alexis Bittar’s collection of Cast Lucite jewelry.

Our collection of glass paper weights and vases by leading artists working in glass today is beyond compare.  When you need a special gift you’ll be proud to give…stop in and let Brian and his staff find the perfect piece to wrap up for you.

Today, we find ourselves in another tough economic period, in a business which we will readily admit is not on everyone’s priority list when expendable income is in short supply…yet our staff of 10 continues to provide the highest quality picture framing services to our devoted customers, assist in finding the perfect piece of art for that hard to fill space, and work with our artists to create the right size painting to finish your home.

We look forward to the opportunity to present our Fall and Spring Collections each year in conjunction with Madison Museum of Contemporary Arts Gallery Walks…the first Friday in May and October.

Stop in to our stores regularly as new items arrive often…The Golden Retrievers, Gabby and Truman will be there to greet you at the frame shop in Middleton…the Tibetan Terriers, Theo and Augie mind the store on Monroe Street…taking our dogs to work with us is the greatest…every dog needs a Job!
There’s an Art to Everything we Do …and it Shows!

Happy 4th of July Weekend!

Every 4th always reminds me of strawberry shortcake, or strawberry/key lime something. This artist's (Pat Doherty) paintings put me in the mood for this weekend, picnics, family, great food and hot...hot...hot weather!

Just having a little fun with the various sun catchers in the windows here.

Oh...we will be closed on the Monday the 4th. Travel safe.

GALLERY NIGHT WAS GREAT!

It was an absolute perfect night for all to wander and take in all the sites in Madison last Friday.
I think most of them visited the gallery...it was packed and we were still open after the event ended!  These are images taken before the event...I tried taking them during the event once... and it was impossible to stand far enough away to get a shot of anything other than someone's ear, or nose...

Everyone always "Loves" all the extra art we have in the back room.

It is small but packed from head to toe, so we can show as many of the talented artists we carry.

The days are getting longer...but where did March go?

I guess I just like taking photos of beautiful things.  The days getting longer is definitely uplifting. But March just flew by too fast...I thought I would get in one more writing before it was gone.  It also gives me an excuse to share more of the talent we have have at the Gallery.

Spring is also a reminder of upcoming Gallery Night, where most of Madison Area Galleries and Shops are open that night. . Prepping for that is underway, and it involves transforming the entire store with new art and craft items for all to partake in that evening. This year it falls on May 6th.  I'm sure I will be posting some sneak peeks of artists we will have that evening before then...

We have gone to the birds!

I saw my first Robin about 10 days ago, and as always it is a reminder of how close Spring really is!

After spotting this little beauty with the song of  Spring so loud it drowned all other noises around, I found myself at the Gallery and noticed how many bird pieces were actually here.  I am surrounded...and felt the need to share a small viewing of the Spring beauty I get to see every day.  It is a welcome distraction if only for a moment, to all that is happening around us.

This Fall Gallery Night

For Fall Gallery Night 2010 we featured the work of Max Arthur Cohn, a New York artist that created art his entire life.
Early on Max was involved in the use of serigraphy as a form of fine art, creating Limited Edition prints that were more obtainable for people during the depression. In the 1950's Max started to modernize his art - allowing for a more abstract interpretation of the figure and landscape. We are featuring works from the late 50's into the 60's.

Stop out or you can see his work on our web site.     http://www.milwardfarrellfineart.com/
